I've read that a good way to maintain your laptop's battery is to completely drain them every once in a while. this implies that you let the system running, turn off automatic standby and hibernation, and wait until the battery dies out. This means that the system will not properly shutdown.

Will this do any harm to any of the hardware or components of the laptop?

I realized that a good way to take care of files and settings is to logout from windows and let the system drain from within the login screen, so that nothing is loaded and all files and settings have been saved.

But what about the hardware? I'm thinking that when properly shutting down, all moving parts (i.e. HD) all move back to whatever their position should be, but if you don't shut them down, they lose power wherever and stop right there. Won't these things cause problems?

If so, what is a good way to completely drain batteries? and should it be done as often as possible?

it will not harm the hdd cuae it has nothing to to do with the battery yes it is good to totaly drain the battery cause the battery does hold a memory

I need to buy a new laptop battery for my Dell Inspiron 9300 and the batteries on the Dell website are expensive and was wondering if there was another reliable website where I can purchase a new battery and adapter. And how do you know if a website really does sell OEM parts?
I've had my laptop for about 4-5 years now so the warranty on my laptop has expired. Dell only covers batteries for 1 year.

Aftermarket batteries have a tendency of catching fire because they are made cheaper and with less attention paid to safety so stay the f*** away from them.

Even well made batteries have been known to catch fire but the batteries that Dell recalled were pretty damn safe compared with aftermarket junk.

You'll also run the risk of buying a dead battery no matter where you buy it from since a lot of 'new' batteries are 'new' old stock and Li-Ion batteries age even when they are in storage.

With Lithium Ion batteries on laptops, there's not much of a problem of battery memory anymore, so one can charge a laptop battery whenever, without having to wait for it to completely discharge.

But what's better overall for my battery's life and the environment (i.e. saves electricity), if I keep my laptop plugged in at all times when I don't need to go portable, or only keep it in enough to charge it, and then let it run off the battery until it runs out of juice?

The battery can only survive a limited number of a cycles so the best way to treat a Li-Ion battery is to not discharge it all the time (though if you do need to use your laptop for the full life of the battery don't worry about doing so, it's discharging the battery every day that'll kill it, not every couple of months) so you should just leave it plugged into the wall when you aren't needing to use it as a portable computer (if you are constantly charging and discharging the battery it won't be long before the battery is dead but if you don't abuse the battery like that then it should be good for a few years).

Don't worry about saving electricity when you're plugged into the wall, it's cheap enough not to matter and laptops use less power than desktops anyway (in terms of global warming saving power is a bad way to solve the problem because it can't solve the problem, only delay it).

Also be careful about storing the battery for long periods of time with low charge, a battery will self-discharge over time and if the charge in a Li-Ion battery gets low enough the protection circuit will burn out parts of the battery preventing it from working (if it didn't then the battery might pose a safety hazard) so if you need to store the battery for a long time get it to about 40% then put it in the fridge (to slow aging).

Oh and ignore the idiots who tell you that discharging the battery will help it (it won't), the aging of Li-Ion batteries is not affected by discharges (the only thing a discharge will do is measure the battery capacity accurately and then store it on the battery so the computer can accurately determine how much charge it has, it won't increase run time unless there's something wrong).
